Year 6 Statutory Assessment

Year 6 Statutory Assessment (SATS)

The SATS (or statutory tests) are taken by all Year 6 children in the country during the first full teaching week of May each year (i.e. the week after Bank Holiday Monday), and in recent years have been spread across four days.

In 2016, the KS2 tests will be administered in the week commencing 9th May 2016. It is very important that all children are in school during this week, as they cannot achieve a score if they do not sit the test. If you have any concerns regarding this year’s KS2 SATS, please see your child’s class teacher as soon as possible.

Schools have some flexibility in how they organise pupils for the tests and at Moulton, the children will sit them in their classrooms.  In some cases, individuals or small groups of children who are entitled to additional support, such as a reader or prompt, will take the tests in a separate room; we will contact you if this is planned for your child.  Over the course of the week, there are three tests altogether covering the various areas of English and mathematics

Changes to KS2 assessment in 2016

From 2016, KS2 national curriculum test outcomes will no longer be reported using levels. Scaled scores will be used instead. There will only be one set of tests for each subject. The tests will include a small number of questions designed to assess the most able pupils so separate tests, such as the previous level 6 tests, are no longer required. The mental mathematics test has been replaced with an arithmetic test.

The KS2 tests consist of:

  • English reading: reading booklet and associated answer booklet
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: short answer questions
  • English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: spelling
  • mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic
  • mathematics Paper 2: reasoning
  • mathematics Paper 3: reasoning

For further information, please watch this short video which explains more about the tests. Also, see the Moulton Primary School - A guide to Year 6 SATS - found in the resources section on the left-hand side.

Writing & Science

Writing is assessed using teacher assessment. There is no test. Teachers attend moderation meetings during the spring term and around 25% of schools have a more formal moderation visit during the summer term to check that their judgements are correct. A small sample of schools are selected each year to sit science tests at KS2, otherwise assessment in science is wholly down to teacher judgement.
